This made me ponder on the power of appreciation in our family lives and the way we praise and encourage our children. If you spend most of your time being positive yet finish your sentences with but you negate all the positive things youve already said to your kids and they will only remember the words after your but.  Then you have the careless, the lazy, and the totally inept. With them you need to apply all your skills to deploy praise and criticism, the carrot and stick, as and when needed.

By a combination of praise, criticism, encouragement, and training many of these people can be turned around to do a good job.
